Union Pacific Q1 Profit Jumps 35%, Beating View (UNP)

Railroad operator Union Pacific Corporation ( UNP ) said Thursday that its first quarter profit grew 35% from last year on higher revenue.

The Omaha-based company reported first quarter net income of $863 million, or $1.79 per share, compared with $639 million, or $1.29 per share, in the year-ago period.

Revenue rose 14% from last year to $5.11 billion.

On average, Wall Street analysts expected a smaller profit of $1.64 per share, on lower revenue of $4.98 billion.

Union Pacific posted small losses in morning trading Thursday.
