The TSX is posting gains in early trading but faces a fight to stay in positive territory given the ongoing dismal state of affairs in Europe. Major U.S. indexes were also slightly in the green, lending support.

Just before 10 a.m. ( ET ), the S&P/TSX index was up 62 points, or 0.55%, at 11,398.

The TSX market was finding some encouragement in crude oil and gold prices, which are edging higher this morning - albeit without a lot of conviction. Energy is leading gains on the TSX, with the sector up 1.10%, followed by materials at 0.67%.

Research In Motion is edging up after suffering heavy losses on Monday, last quoted up 1.2%.
