The TSX maintained its strength and was up by 111 points mid-afternoon, reaching 14415.10.

The benchmark index was boosted by improving sentiments over China's economic growth when the Asian giant reported a 7.4% expansion in its economy in Q1. The market was also drawing support from U.S. data that showed industrial production rose faster-than-expected.

Energy stocks were still in the lead, up 1.2%, despite weakness in crude oil and natural gas prices . Info tech was up 1.0%. Miners, with the help of rising gold prices , jumped 0.8%. The heavyweight financial sector advanced 0.6%.
