The TSX narrowed its early losses to 88 points in mid-afternoon trading, to settle at 15,114.56, after utility stocks turned to a gain and healthcare issues remained strong despite a widespread decline. The benchmark index has hit a new intraday low of 15,089.24.

Upbeat U.S. jobless claims data seemed to have failed to lift investor sentiments after Russia announced in the previous session that it plans to retaliate to sanctions imposed by the U.S. and Europe by banning food, fruit, and vegetable imports.

Data showed that there were fewer Americans who filed applications for jobless claims last week.

Healthcare remained the sole gainer, up 2.15%.

On the other hand, resource stocks were leading the way for decliners. Miners and energy were down 0.99% and 1.01%, respectively, with the price of silver and oil dropping. Info tech trimmed its early losses to 0.81%, while the heavyweight financials fell 0.74%.

More than 191 million shares have changed hands so far. Blackpearl Resources (PXX.TO) was the most actively traded stock.
