TSX Closes Up 90 Pts, La Mancha Resources Most Active

By Midnight Trader July 13, 2012, 04:02:59 PM EDT

Canada's main stock market gained around 90 points and closed near session highs Friday, particularly buoyed by buying in mining and energy stocks after GDP data in China came in strong enough to quash any talk of the economy there being in trouble, but weak enough to restart talk of further economic stimulus being needed there.

While a 7.6% reading of gross domestic product growth in China marked a three year low, it was just above expectations.

Oil rose for a third day on the China stimulus speculation. Gold futures rose for the first in four sessions, on that speculation, but also from weakness in the U.S. dollar.

Most actively traded was La Mancha Resources (LMA.TO), which rose more than 50% with close to 8 million shares changing hands. Today, French nuclear reactor maker Areva said it will pocket $315 million from selling its stake in the Canadian gold producer to Weather II Investments, managed by Egyptian entrepreneur Naguib Sawiris.
