TSX Closes Little Changed; Whitecap Resources Most Active

By Midnight Trader October 26, 2012, 04:07:06 PM EDT

Canada's main stock market lost early gains that saw it gain around 50 points inside the opening 30 minutes but then succumb to selling pressure and - despite a few attempts to lift itself again - eventually end the day little changed from where it stood at Thursday's close.

Investors and traders may have taken some profits and been wary about gettting too far ahead of themselves with continuing uncertainty about the pace of global economic growth. However, positive durable goods, initial claims and GDP data out of the United States - which is Canada's largest trading partner - over the last two days, may have put a floor under the losses.

Most actively traded was Whitecap Resources (WCP.TO) which gained more than 6% with around 11.6 million shares traded. Thursday it announced an increase to credit facilities and disposition of non-core assets.

Oil futures settled with a slight gain Friday, but suffered a decline of more than 4% for the week as recent economic data in the U.S. and elsewhere did little to spur demand prospects, MarketWatch reported. December crude rose 0.3% to settle at US$86.28 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Gold futures fell at the close on Friday to mark their third weekly decline in a row, as investors scrutinized U.S. data on GDP and consumer sentiment, MarketWatch reported. Gold for December delivery fell $1.10 to settle at $1,711.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
