TSX Closes Down About 10 Pts, But Off Session Lows Hit Mid-Afternoon; Baja Mining Digs Hole

By Midnight Trader April 24, 2012, 03:57:56 PM EDT

Canada's main stock index closed down around 10 points on Wednesday, but more than 20 points higher than session lows struck with around 90 minutes left.

Easily most active was Baja Mining Corp. (BAJ.TO) - twice as traded as the next most active - which lost a third of its value to close at 38 cents and touched a year low 34 cents with around 13.6 million shares traded. The stock has been bashed since yesterday after announcing cost increase of about $246 million, a 22% increase over 2010 project funding requirements.

Also active was Cline Mining (CMK.TO). It lost nearly 7% and hit new year lows.

But some other metals and mining shares were higher, or in the case of Viterra (VT.TO) higher for most of the day. Viterra, which is about to be bought by Glencore International plc, actually closed unchanged in the end while Teck Resources (TCK-B.TO) gained 1.5% on its result.

Oil rose in New York after home prices in 20 U.S. cities dropped at a slower pace in February, bolstering optimism that economic expansion will accelerate in the world's biggest crude-consuming country, Bloomberg reported.
