TSX Closes Down 24 Pts, Dreadful Start Put It On Back Foot From Off

By Midnight Trader September 26, 2012, 04:06:12 PM EDT

Canada's main stock market closed down around 24 points Wednesday, a run to drag itself back from a dreadful start - it opened nearly 100 points lower than the previous close - running out of puff in the end. It did get to within 3 points of the previous close mid-afternoon.

Shares in the Metals and Mining, and Energy sectors were down on lower gold and oil prices. They, in turn, were down on concerns about the outlook for the European economy amid reports of tensions in Greece and Spain in particular.

Crude oil futures ended 1.5% lower. Gold for December delivery was off $12.80, to settle at $1,753.60 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange's Comex division.
