The Toronto stock market was modestly higher in afternoon trading, giving up earlier gains in the wake of solid job creation numbers in Canada and the United States.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 13 points at 12,164 after hitting a high of 12,208 in morning trading.

Utilities and materials led advancers in the TSX's sub-sectors amid higher commodity prices.

Heavily traded Uranium One (UUU.TO) shed 4% while Viterra (VT.TO) added 2% on news that China has approved Glencore's takeover of Viterra.
