TSX at 2pm: TSX Modestly Higher as Health Care, Tech Stocks Rise

The Toronto stock market was modestly higher in afternoon trading in a broad-based rally paced by health care, tech and gold stocks.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 24 points to 12,691, down from session highs of 12,703.

Trading volume was lighter than normal with U.S. markets closed for a holiday.

Nearly all of the TSX's sub-sectors were higher, led by health care, tech and telecom. Materials was also higher as gold stocks advanced.

Heavily traded Open Text (OTC.TO) gained 2%. Last week, the company announced it will start paying a quarterly dividend of $0.30 per share.

Valeant Pharmaceuticals (VRX.TO) gained 10% after announcing plans to expand its eye-care business by buying Bausch and Lomb for US$8.7 billion.
