TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc.
(
TQNT
) recently received a $2.7 million contract from the Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The contract order seeks
to triple the power-handling performance of gallium nitride (GaN)
circuits.
TriQuint will empower DARPA to build i The Near Junction Thermal
Transport (NJTT) technology, based on its advanced GaN on silicon
carbide (SiC) technology and the reliable state-of-the-art RF
integrated circuits.
The NJTT initiative is the most recent addition in DARPA's
overarching Thermal Management Technologies program focus primarily
on thermal resistance at the 'near junction' of the transistor die
along with device substrate. These areas are mainly responsible for
more than 50% of operational temperature increases.
As per the contract, TriQuint will combine its leading GaN on
SiC process technology with diamond substrates and new thermal
handling processes and thereby expect to significantly reduce heat
build-up to enable GaN devices to generate higher level of
power.
Management is encouraged to receive the contract and will
partner University of Bristol (United Kingdom), Group4 Labs and
American-based
Lockheed Martin
(
LMT
) in the program.
TriQuint designs, develops and manufactures advanced
high-performance RF solutions with gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium
nitride (GaN), surface acoustic wave (SAW), temperature compensated
surface acoustic wave (TC-SAW), and bulk acoustic wave (BAW)
technologies for customers, on a worldwide basis.
In the defense and aerospace end market, TriQuint has a long
association with key military subcontractors to the U.S.
government. Being a pioneer in GaN technology since 1999, TriQuint
serves the U.S. Air Force, Army and Navy laboratories along with
DARPA.
Defense and aerospace markets rely on dependable microwave
monolithic integrated circuits (MMICs) in die-level and packaged
forms, as well as SAW and BAW filters.
Encouraged by the contract, TriQuint believes that NJTT will
lead to more substantial MMIC performance enhancements enabling
reduced size, weight and power consumption thereby increasing
reliability and output power.
We currently have a Neutral recommendation on TriQuint. Our
recommendation is supported by a Zacks #3 Rank, which translates
into a short-term rating of Hold.
