Trefis Morning Coffee – Cisco, Adobe, Pepsi & Nasdaq

A mid-week espresso shot packed with a few key insights… Cisco ( CSCO ) announced its decision to shut down the popular point-and-shoot Flip camera business in an effort to refocus on core strategy. The business was acquired relatively recently (2009), but trends like declining unit sales and the growing prevalence of video functionality in smartphones appear to have spurred the decision to drop the product. Moving away from hardware and into software, Adobe ( ADBE ) is planning a mid-cycle release of its creative software suite version 5. The typical 18-24 month period between software releases often leads to a mid-cycle dropoff in market share, so the mid-cycle release decision seems to be en effort to offset the typical decline. The most recent version was released in May 2010.

Adobe - Forecast of the Day

Adobe dominates the creative software market with leading photo editing, publishing and web design products.

While new software versions are typically released every 18-24 months, Adobe is planning a mid-cycle release of creative software version 5. More frequent releases could stem the typical mid-cycle dropoff in creative software market share.
