Names showing of unusual option activity

Nearing the halfway mark in today's session, here are the top names showing unusual option activity on tradeMONSTER's LiveAction data system.

Pharmaceutical Product Development (PPDI): Option volume 1,770 percent above average. About 6,000 January 30 calls were and an equal number of January 32.50 calls were bought as an investor bet that upside will be limited. PPDI rose 0.19 percent to $32.30.

99 Cents Stores (NDN): Option volume 1,109 percent above average. Call activity surged as the company accepted a takeover offer. NDN rose 4.39 percent to $21.39.

Warner Chilcott (WCRX): Option volume 1,057 percent above average. Investors sold the January 14 puts and the November 18 calls, looking for the stock to remain trapped in a range. WCRX rose 2.64 percent to $15.92.

Seabridge Gold (SA): Option volume 910 percent above average. About 7,000 November 23 calls were bought for $1.40 to $2.25 as investors positioned for upside. SA rose 4.28 percent to $22.89.

Harmony Gold (HMY): Option volume 848 percent above average. An investor sold 8,000 November 13 puts for $1.275 and sold an equal number of November 11 puts for $0.40, looking for shares to hold their ground or push modestly higher. HMY fell 2.85 percent to $12.28.

Rounding out the unusual activity: 

Synaptics (SYNA): Option volume 334 percent above average.
