Top 10 list of unusual option activity

Nearing the halfway mark in today's session, here are the top 10 names showing unusual option activity on tradeMONSTER's LiveAction data system.

Fortune Brands (FO): Option volume 1,342 percent above average. Blocks of about 5,000 contracts each were bought in the August 60 puts and the August 65 calls, although volume was below open interest. FO fell 0.62 percent to $60.68.

MELA Sciences (MELA): Option volume 1,159 percent above average. Some 5,400 January 2.50 puts were sold for $0.60, looking for the stock to hold its ground. MELA rose 1.13 percent to $2.68.

Helix Energy (HLX): Option volume 1,075 percent above average. More than 9,000 January 2013 7.50 puts were sold for $0.50. HLX rose 1.47 percent to $19.99.

Clearwire (CLWR): Option volume 1,032 percent above average. More than 13,000 December 1 puts were bought for $0.17 to $0.20. CLWR fell 17 percent to $2.29.

MFA Financial (MFA): Option volume 786 percent above average. About 2,900 January 8 puts were bought for $0.95 against existing open interest. MFA fell 0.26 percent to $7.59.

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 are:

  • BSD Medical (BSDM): Option volume 679 percent above average.
  • Skechers USA (SKX): Option volume 615 percent above average.
  • Motorola Solutions (MSI): Option volume 578 percent above average.
  • Titan International (TWI): Option volume 562 percent above average.
  • Digital River (DRIV): Option volume 549 percent above average.
