Thursday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Technology & Communications

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Thursday, shares of Utilities companies are underperforming other sectors, higher by 0.2%. Within that group, NRG Energy Inc (Symbol: NRG) and NiSource Inc. (Symbol: NI) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 2.4% and 0.5%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is up 0.3% on the day, and up 20.22% year-to-date. NRG Energy Inc, meanwhile, is up 0.30% year-to-date, and NiSource Inc. is up 31.91% year-to-date. Combined, NRG and NI make up approximately 1.9% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Technology & Communications sector, up 0.5%. Among large Technology & Communications stocks, Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Symbol: LVLT) and Applied Materials, Inc. (Symbol: AMAT) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.6% and 1.2%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Technology & Communications stocks is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLK ), which is up 0.5% in midday trading, and up 13.22% on a year-to-date basis. Level 3 Communications, Inc., meanwhile, is down 13.26% year-to-date, and Applied Materials, Inc. is up 63.31% year-to-date. Combined, LVLT and AMAT make up approximately 1.1% of the underlying holdings of XLK.
