Thursday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Energy

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Thursday, shares of Utilities companies are underperforming other sectors, not showing much of a gain. Within that group, AES Corp. (Symbol: AES) and CenterPoint Energy, Inc (Symbol: CNP) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 2.0% and 0.8%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is flat on the day on the day, and up 16.99% year-to-date. AES Corp., meanwhile, is down 4.56% year-to-date, and CenterPoint Energy, Inc is up 21.15% year-to-date. Combined, AES and CNP make up approximately 2.7% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, higher by 0.1%. Among large Energy stocks, Range Resources Corp (Symbol: RRC) and EQT Corp (Symbol: EQT) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is up 0.2% in midday trading, and down 6.63% on a year-to-date basis. Range Resources Corp, meanwhile, is down 53.04% year-to-date, and EQT Corp, is down 14.04% year-to-date. Combined, RRC and EQT make up approximately 2.1% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
