Discount apparel and home goods retailer The TJX Companies, Inc. ( TJX ) on Tuesday posted first quarter earnings results that narrowly topped expectations, although its second quarter and full-year outlook were lower than Wall Street's view.

The Framingham, MA-based company reported first quarter net income of 55 cents per share on $5.8 billion in revenue. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a slightly smaller profit of 54 cents per share, on slightly lower revenue of $5.75 billion.

Looking ahead, TJX forecast second quarter earnings of 47 to 50 cents per share, which would miss analysts' view for 51 cents. For the full year 2012, TJX lifted its earnings outlook to a range of $2.27 to $2.37 per share, up from previous guidance of $2.26 to $2.36. Analysts expect a still-higher $2.39 per share for the year.

The TJX Companies shares rose 55 cents, or +1.4%, in premarket trading Tuesday.
