The lightning or lightning bug? - introducing NASDAQ.com financial glossary

By Bruce Hashim September 14, 2011, 12:02:42 PM EDT

Words are important. As Mark Twain famously said, "The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning." That is true with common language and doubly so when using terms specific to an industry such as finance. Have you ever seen a financial term in print or online and wondered exactly what it meant? For example, what is beta? How can beta affect your financial decisions? What the heck is a time value premium, and how does it affect investment strategy?

NASDAQ.com’s new financial glossary was created for you. It provides quick, concise, and relevant definitions of over 8,000 financial words, phrases, and terms. The glossary itself is user friendly, too – featuring full search functionality, an alphabetical lookup, a "term of the day" to grow your financial vocabulary, and a dynamic list of the most popular searches on NASDAQ.com. In short, our glossary will allow you to be the "lightning" when discussing finance.

(By the way, beta is "the measure of an asset's risk in relation to the market." And time value premium is “the amount by which an option's total premium exceeds its intrinsic value.” Just in case you were wondering.)

Cheers,
