Surging Gold, Silver Commodity Prices Boost Mining Stocks, Lifting Canadian Markets Higher

Canadian stocks are up today, with all 10 industry sectors in the S&P/TSX Composite Index flat to higher. The strongest performance is coming among gold producers and other mining stocks, helped along by a rise of nearly 1% each in the price of gold and silver futures today. Tech stocks are the relative laggards, being flat.

Here's where the Canadian markets stand today:

- S&P/TSX Composite Index up 70.71 (+0.57%) to 12,430.18

- S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index up 7.59 (+0.57%) to 1,332.81

In company news, shares of EnCana Corp (ECA, ECA.TO) are down more than 1% on the TSX, giving back small gains earlier in the session after the natural gas producer was hit with a downgrade to Sell and a $20 a share price target at Deutsche Bank.
