Success for BSD's Rental Program - Analyst Blog

Cancer treatment systems maker BSD Medical ( BSDM ) has announced  the successful launch of the fee-per-use equipment rental program for its MicroTh ermX Microwave Ablation system in Salt Lake City.

The program allows hospitals to buy the company's disposable SynchroWave antennas (used with the MicroThermX system) and pay a fee-per-use rental for treating patients using the innovative MicroThermX system.

BSD Medical's equipment rental program is aimed at maximizing revenues from MicroThermX products and boost market penetration. It has been successful in the Salt Lake City area, where the program is being test-marketed.

The company currently has rental programs at five hospitals in Salt Lake City. Physicians at these hospitals have used the MicroThermX system to treat patients with liver, kidney and lung cancers. The rental program has catalyzed increased sales of the disposable antennas and generated highly profitable equipment rental fees. BSD Medical is optimistic of achieving the same results throughout the nation.

The MicroThermX system (launched in the U.S. in December 2011) is a transportable, cutting-edge proprietary product, which includes a microwave generator, single-use antennas and a temperature monitoring mechanism. It is capable of generating significant levels of power with one generator. Its usage helps approach larger and more uniform areas of ablation during a procedure.

The MicroThermX system utilizes BSD Medical's proprietary synchronous phased array technology to deliver precision-guided microwave energy to ablate soft tissues using a single-patient-use disposable antenna.

The minimally-invasive MicroThermX system has been developed to provide treatments as a stand-alone therapy and has applications in open surgical and percutaneous (via needle-puncture of the skin) ablation procedures. The novel therapy system has already treated 100 patients at hospitals across the U.S.

BSD Medical provides hyperthermia and ablation therapy systems to treat cancer and benign diseases. It competes with established players like Boston Scientific ( BSX ) and Angiodynamics ( ANGO ) in the thermal ablation market.
