Stocks tread water in early trading

After the Open... Stocks are going pretty much nowhere this morning, led by a perfectly unremarkable earnings report from Target (tgt). If the recent pattern continues, traders will wait until about midday, then find some international news to latch onto to determine the afternoon's momentum.

Here are your Wednesday morning market metrics. Industries doing well today include Airlines, Textiles and Aerospace. Industries showing weakness include Life Sciences, Leisure Products, Containers & Packaging.

The VIX is down 1% to 12.09 after closing on Tuesday at 12.21. Petroleo Brasileiro (pbr) options are the most actively traded today, with 45,546 September 18 calls, 10,000 November 21 calls, and 10,000 November 23 calls changing hands. The put-call volume ratio is 0.96, (507,947/485,978). NYSE Adv/Dec 1,197, 1,756. Nasdaq Adv/Dec 773,1,697.
