(RTTNews.com) - Southwest Airlines Co. ( LUV ) reported Monday operational results for the month of September, reporting year-over-year increases in traffic, capacity and load factor. The passenger revenue per available seat mile or PRASM, for September 2013 is estimated to have increased in the seven to eight percent range when compared to September 2012.
Dallas, Texas-based Southwest said traffic, measured in revenue passenger miles or RPMs, grew 1.3 percent to 7.86 billion from 7.76 billion in the same month last year. Capacity, measured in available seat miles or ASMs, also increased 1.2 percent to 10.20 billion from last year's 10.08 billion.
Load factor for the month edged up 0.1 percentage points to 77.1 percent from the year-ago month's 77.0 percent.
Revenue passengers carried totaled 8.15 million, down 2.5 percent from 8.37 million in the year-ago month.
The number of passengers enplaned during the month grew 1.3 percent to 10.12 million from last year. Meanwhile, the number of trips flown declined 3.6 percent to 103,141 from a year ago.
For the third quarter, traffic edged down 0.6 percent to 27.01 billion RPMs from 27.16 billion RPMs in the same period last year. Meanwhile, capacity decreased 1.0 percent to 33.43 billion ASMs from last year 33.08 billion ASMs.
Load factor for the quarter was also down 1.3 percentage points to 80.8 percent from the year-ago quarter's 82.1 percent.
For the year-to-date nine-month period, traffic edged up 0.8 percent to 78.70 billion RPMs from 78.05 billion RPMs in the same period last year. Capacity also improved 1.6 percent to 98.46 billion ASMs from last year at 96.94 billion ASMs.
However, load factor for the period edged down 0.6 percentage points to 79.9 percent from the year-ago period's 80.5 percent.
LUV closed Friday's regular trading session at $14.89, up $0.21 on a volume of 5.14 million shares.
