(RTTNews.com) - Southwest Airlines Co. ( LUV ) reported Wednesday operational results for the month of June, reporting year-over-year increases in traffic, capacity, and load factor from last year. The passenger revenue per available seat mile or PRASM, for June 2014 is estimated to have increased in the seven to eight percent range when compared to June 2013.
Dallas, Texas-based Southwest said traffic, measured in revenue passenger miles or RPMs, grew 2.2 percent to 10.07 billion from 9.85 billion in the same month last year. Capacity, measured in available seat miles or ASMs, also increased 0.9 percent to 11.69 billion from last year's 11.59 billion.
Load factor for the month was also up 1.1 percentage points to 86.1 percent from the year-ago month's 85.0 percent.
Revenue passengers carried totaled 10.07 million, up 1.6 percent from 9.91 million in the year-ago month.
The number of passengers enplaned during the month edged up 1.0 percent to 12.36 million from last year. However, the number of trips flown declined 3.7 percent to 109,758 from a year ago.
For the second quarter, traffic grew 2.4 percent to 28.59 billion RPMs from 27.93 billion RPMs in the same period last year. Meanwhile, capacity decreased 0.4 percent to 34.10 billion ASMs from last year 34.23 billion ASMs.
Load factor for the quarter was up 2.3 percentage points to 83.9 percent from the year-ago quarter's 81.6 percent.
The company also noted that it currently expects the year-over-year increase in second quarter 2014 PRASM to exceed eight percent when compared to the year-ago quarter.
For the year-to-date six-month period, traffic increased 2.0 percent to 52.75 billion RPMs from 51.69 billion RPMs in the same period last year. Meanwhile, capacity edged down 0.7 percent to 64.57 billion ASMs from last year's 65.03 billion ASMs.
Load factor for the half-yearly period improved 2.2 percentage points to 81.7 percent from the year-ago period's 79.5 percent.
LUV closed Tuesday's regular trading session at $26.70, down $0.18 on a volume of 12.06 million shares.
