According to a recent report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), " Education at a Glance 2011 ," South Korea has the sixth most educated populace in the world. It's a focus that has paid off in world-class companies such as Hyundai Motors ( HYMLF , quote ), SK Telecom ( SKM , quote ) and Kia  Motors ( KIMTF , quote ).

The Koreans are also getting noticed internationally: South Korean private schools rank high in the percentage of students sent to exclusive American colleges such as Harvard and Yale.

The OECD study found that 39% of the South Korean population had a post-secondary education. This contributes greatly to South Korea having the fifth highest growth rate in the world in the 2000s.

It's also significant is that the most popular majors are not in the social sciences, or even business or law. Education, humanities and arts are now selected by more students, a sure sign of an evolving economy.
