Shire Leads Gains Among European ADRs After Abbvie Statement on Possible Takeover, U.S. Patent Ruling

Shire Plc ( SHPG ) led gainers among European ADRs on Wednesday defying the fourth day of a slump in the region's markets.

The Bank of New York Europe ADR Index fell 0.03%, compared with a 0.2% gain for the S&P 500 Stock Index. Europe ADR advancers led decliners 58 to 57.

Shire rose 3% to $229.87 per ADR after Abbvie Inc. ( ABBV ) released a statement urging Shire's shareholders to consider the benefits of a takeover. Shire also won a favor patent ruling on in a U.S. court.

ADR gainers included Sequans Communications Sa ( SQNS ) +1.9%, Luxfer Holdings Plc ( LXFR ) $1.8% and ING Groep Nv ( ING ) +1.7%.

ADR decliners included CGG (CGG) -3.6%, Promotora de Informaciones Sa (PRIS-B) and National Bank of Greece (NBG).
