Shares of Consumer Staples Companies Fractionally Higher, Outpacing Broader Market

Consumer Staples stocks (SP500-30) are up 0.3% as a group today, easily outpacing an 0.8% decline for the broader market measured by the S&P 500 ( SPX ). Year-to-date, however, these brand name product makers are up 15.6% on average, underperforming a 19.4% rise for the general market.

Among the sector companies enjoying higher prices today is Proctor & Gamble ( PG ), rising 1.4% following an upgrade at Wells Fargo to Outperform from Market Perform. PG also is attracting support after CEO Rodney Sacks told attendees at the company's annual meeting creating shareholder value is a top priority.

Other gainers today include Monster Beverage ( MNST ), up 4.0%; Energizer Holdings ( ENR ), rising 1%; and Coca-Cola ( KO ), advancing 0.3%.
