Sector Update: Info Tech; Wi-Lan Signs Licensing Deal with Sony, Sandvine Reports Q2 Earnings

Information technology shares were mostly negative in afternoon trading. The S&P/TSX Info Tech index was down 0.4%.

BlackBerry (BB.TO): +0.9%

Wi-Lan (WIN.TO): +0.2%

Sandvine (SVC.TO): -1.7%

Constellation Software (CSU.TO): -1.3%

Celestica (CLS.TO): -1.2%

In company news, Sandvine Thursday reported Q2 diluted earnings per share of 0.028 compared to 0.006 a year earlier. This was in line with expectations. Revenue for the period was $29.7 million and this was a little less than the $30 million-plus forecast, according to BNN TV.

According to Capital IQ on Wednesday afternoon, the average forecast of seven analysts was for EPS of C$0.03.

Meanwhile, Gaming and home entertainment giant Sony ( SNE ) has signed an agreement to obtain license to Wi-LAN's (WILN, WIN.TO) portfolio of television technology patents, including a certain 3D television technology developed by SENSIO Technologies (SIO.V), maker of display-formatting technologies.

The technology licensing firm's portfolio includes V-Chip parental control, display conversion, closed captioning technologies, and SENSIO's S2D Switch technology. All the remaining terms of the agreement weren't disclosed.
