Information technology shares were mostly lower in afternoon trading, and the S&P/TSX Info Tech index was down 0.5%.

BlackBerry (BB.TO): -1.1%

Absolute Software (ABT.TO): -0.4%

Smart Technologies (SMA.TO): -5.7%

CGI Group (GIB-A.TO): -0.5%

Constellation Software (CSU.TO): flat

In corporate news, Absolute Software Thursday announced it will embed its persistence platform in Microsoft's Surface Pro 3 tablet.

Under the terms of the agreement, Absolute persistence technology will be embedded in Surface Pro 3 tablets in the 29 geographies where Surface tablets are sold.

Meanwhile, BlackBerry is selling its research and development department in Germany to Volkswagen Infotainment, a subsidiary of the automaker that makes interactive technology built into vehicle dashboards, according to a Canadian press report being carried on the Globe and Mail website Thursday.

The companies say the deal will shift about 200 BlackBerry employees in Bochum, Germany, to Volkswagen, according to the report.
