Financial shares mixed in today's pre-market session with stocks little changed after new housing data. New home construction rose 0.9% in August to an annual rate of 891,000 for single family home starts. That's less than the roughly 921,000 housing starts economists had forecast.

In financial stocks news this morning, E*Trade ( ETFC ) reported today that Daily Average Revenue Trades for August were 147,517, a 5% increase from July and a 21% increase from the year-ago period. ETFC is steady in pre-market trade at $17.48.

The company said it added 30,132 gross new brokerage accounts in August, ending the month with approximately 3.0 million brokerage accounts - an increase of 9,466 from July.

And, Westfield Financial, Inc. ( WFD ) said late Tuesday that its board of directors has authorized a stock repurchase program under which the company may repurchase up to 1.037 million shares, or 5% of its outstanding common stock.

The company completed its previous stock repurchase program of 1.092 million shares of its common stock on June 11, 2013. Shares of WFD are steady at $6.99 in pre-market trade.
