Energy shares are broadly lower even as crude oil futures finish
the day with gains, topping $98 a barrel.
Light, sweet crude oil for September delivery finished up 0.7%
to $98.14 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil was down
0.27% to $3.08 a gallon while natural gas was down 0.2% to $4.52
per million British thermal units.
In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund (
) is down 0.39% to $38.10. The United States Natural Gas ETF (
) is up 0.26% at $11.39.
In late-session energy news, Murphy Oil (
) is up after DealReporter says the company may be in merger talks
with Husky Energy.
Murphy Oil shares are up 4.95%, or $3.23, to $68.64.
Meanwhile, shares of Exxon Mobil (
) are down 0.2% to $83.46 as Reuters reported that the
petrochemicals giant is seeking partners for half of its interest
in a coal bed methane project in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Exxon Mobil Corporation is offering a stake in three blocks
where drilling results have so far been good.
