Financial shares are higher in today's pre-market session after U.S. jobless claims edged up to 333,000 in the week ended Aug. 3, according to the Labor Department. Economists expected about 339,000 claims.

In financial stocks news, Medical Properties Trust ( MPW ) reports Q2 FFO of $0.24 per share, missing Street estimates by $0.01. It reports revenue of $57.47 million, off estimates by $2.8 million. MPW is flat in pre-market.

And Apollo Global ( APO ) reports net income per share of $0.50, versus last year's $0.05. That's right in line with the Street estimate of $0.50 per share. Revenue of $497.3 million, which beats by $43.7 million. APO is up 0.4% at $28.00 per share in pre-market trade.

Finally, Walker & Dunlop ( WD ) reports Q2 EPS of $0.44 per share, missing estimates by $0.11. WD is flat at $63.62.
