Qualcomm to Test LTE-Direct in Germany - Analyst Blog

Qualcomm Inc. ( QCOM ) has decided to collaborate with Germany's leading mobile operator Deutsche Telekom, to test run LTE-Direct technology.

LTE Direct is an innovative device-to-device technology that enables continuous discovery of devices and services in the proximity (around 500 meter), while maintaining privacy and battery efficiency. LTE-Direct is likely to be a operator-owned platform which functions using LTE spectrum and infrastructure to offer a range of differentiated applications and services.

Qualcomm benefits from the significant growth of 4G LTE technology. The growing acceptance of the technology has prompted mobile handset manufacturers to develop phones that will be compatible with this network.

The company is a major chipset provider to Apple Inc. ( AAPL ) and Samsung, which together constitute 40% of the smarphone and 50% of the tablet market globally. In addition, Qualcomm's Gobi mobile Internet connectivity solutions provide 3G/4G LTE connectivity to devices that run on Microsoft Corp. ( MSFT ) developed Windows 8 software.

Qualcomm has a highly diversified product portfolio. Several original equipment manufacturers are adopting high-speed 3G and 4G technologies for connecting tablets, eReaders, machine-to-machine communication devices, and gaming devices.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform and Gobi platform for global wireless connectivity support almost all varieties of mobile broadband equipment. Qualcomm also unveiled an innovative smartwatch called "Toq", which can simultaneously receive phone calls, send messages and play music.

In Jan 2014, Qualcomm acquired a portfolio of patents from Hewlett-Packard Co. ( HPQ ). The portfolio comprises 1,400 granted and pending patent applications from the U.S. and about 1,000 granted and pending patent applications from other countries including China, England, Germany, Japan and South Korea.

The patent portfolio covers a wide range of technologies that include fundamental mobile operating system techniques. Acquisition of this patent portfolio will enable Qualcomm to more aggressively expand into the global mobility market.
