#PreMarket Primer: Friday, February 21: Another Truce Reached In Ukraine

After a triple-digit intraday high, major indices retreated slightly but still ended the day with impressive gains.

The Dow gained about 92 points to close at 16,133.23. The S&P was up 0.6 percent, or about 11 points to close at 1,839.78, and the NASDAQ was up 0.7 percent to 4,267.55.

This morning, U.S. markets are indicated higher. The Dow is 28 points higher, the S&P is two points higher and the NASDAQ is indicated to gain about six points at the open.

Asian Markets

A bullish Wall Street sent Asian indices higher Friday. The Nikkei was up about 2.8 percent to close at 14,865.67 and the Hang Seng was up nearly 0.8 percent to finish at 22,568.24.

The Shanghai Composite closed one percent lower at 2,113.69 and the Kospi was 1.4 percent higher closing at 1957.83.

European Markets

A positive Wall Street followed by strong gains in Asia are sending European markets mostly higher. The FTSE is 0.3 percent higher at 6,833.44 and the DAX is flat at 9,619.03. Finally, the CAC is 0.2 percent higher at 4364.16.

Commodities

Natural gas's huge move continues to make headlines. Other commodities are mixed. WTI is down 0.2 percent at $102.53 while Brent is down 0.2 percent at $110.05. Natural gas is 2.2 percent higher at $6.19.

Gold is up about 0.3 percent at $1,320.60 and silver is higher by about 0.4 percent at $21.76. Copper is unchanged at $3.27.

Currencies

The euro is 0.1 percent lower against the dollar at 1.3704 and the dollar is about 0.1 percent higher against the yen at 102.38

The pound is 0.1 percent higher against the dollar at 1.666 and the Aussie dollar is at 0.899 against the dollar-nearly flat.

Pre-Market Movers

Groupon (NASDAQ: GRPN ) is down 14 percent this morning while Fleetmatics Group (NYSE: FLTX ) is lower by 23 percent. General Motors (NYSE: GM ) is down 1.4 percent and Anglogold (NYSE: AU ) is lower by almost two percent.

Aruba Networks (NASDAQ: ARUN ) is up six percent, J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP ) is up more than four percent, and Yelp (NYSE: YELP ) is up two percent.

Earnings reports from Thursday:

Actavis (NYSE: ACT ) reported fourth quarter EPS of $3.17, beating the consensus estimate of $3.05. Revenue of $2.78 billion beat the consensus estimate of $2.68 billion. Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT ) reported fourth quarter EPS of $1.60, beating the consensus estimate of $1.59. Revenue of $129.7 billion missed the consensus estimate of $130.44 billion. DIRECTV (NYSE: DTV ) reported fourth quarter EPS of $1.53, beating the consensus estimate of $1.19. Revenue of $8.95 billion beat the consensus estimate of $8.48 billion. Crocs (NASDAQ: CROX ) reported fourth EPS of -$0.20, beating the consensus estimate of $-0.23. Revenue of $228.6 million beat the consensus estimate of $221.24 million. Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) reported first quarter EPS of $0.90, beating the consensus estimate of $0.84. Revenue of $28.2 billion beat the consensus estimate of $27.19 billion. Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN ) reported fourth quarter EPS of $1.37, beating the consensus estimate of $1.34. Revenue of $3.61 billion missed the consensus estimate of $3.72 billion. Groupon reported fourth quarter EPS of $0.04, beating the consensus estimate of $0.02. Revenue of $768.4 million beat the consensus estimate of $718.04 million. Priceline.com (NASDAQ: PCLN ) reported fourth quarter EPS of $8.85, beating the consensus estimate of $8.29. Revenue of $1.54 billion beat the consensus estimate of $1.52 billion.

Dish Network (NASDAQ: ) is projected to report its Q4 earnings at $0.41 per share on revenue of $3.59 billion. Barnes Group (NYSE: ) is estimated to report its Q4 earnings at $0.52 per share on revenue of $297.54 million. Boise Cascade Company (NYSE: ) is projected to report its Q4 earnings at $0.18 per share on revenue of $819.79 million. Ecolab (NYSE: ) is expected to report its Q4 earnings at $1.05 per share on revenue of $3.54 billion. Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR ) is expected to report its Q4 earnings at $0.24 per share on revenue of $2.16 billion.
