Potash Corp Chides Conference Board for 'Speculative' Approach, Says Government Should Remain Open to Alternative Bids

By Midnight Trader October 05, 2010, 10:28:21 AM EDT

Potash Corp. (POT.TO) is falling lower from an already weak start after urging the Saskatchewan government to remain open to alternative bids for the company while still discouraging potential acquisitions like the current offer by BHP Billiton.

In a statement this morning, POT executives also chided the Conference Board of Canada - and by extension, provincial officials - for a "speculative approach" in its assessment yesterday of the BHP bid. Instead, they said the Canadian officials should support the sale of potash to offshore interests through Canpotex and allowing those buyers to buy potash on an arms-length basis, for their own needs, as a consumer.
