Fashion specialty retailer Nordstrom, Inc. ( JWN ) late Thursday posted lower-than-expected first quarter earnings and backed its tepid full-year outlook, sending its shares lower in aftermarket trading.

The Seattle-based company reported first quarter net income of $149 million, or 70 cents per share, compared with $145 million, or 65 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Revenue rose nearly 14% from last year to $2.53 billion.

On average, Wall Street analysts expected a higher profit of 75 cents per share, on slightly lower revenue of $2.52 billion.

Looking ahead, JWN backed its previously-announced full-year 2012 earnings outlook of $3.30 to $3.45 per share, which would miss Wall Street's forecast of $3.48 per share for the year.

Nordstrom shares closed down 40 cents in Thursday trading, but the shares were indicated significantly lower in after hours trading.

Shares of Nordstrom Inc. ( JWN ) have a 2.02% dividend yield, based on today's closing stock price of $53.53. The stock has technical support in the $48-$50 price area. If the stock can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the all-time high price level of $57 a share.
