The Dow (^DJI), down in seven of the past eight Junes, surged to start the star-crossed month with its best gain in weeks. In the words of Henry Ford ( F ) - whose car company just jumped 1.34% to a multi-year peak in a roaring auto sector - "History is bunk."

The ebullience in equities was such that even Yum Brands ( YUM ) gained 1.86%, this as an employee at its Taco Bell unit was photographed licking his customers' food . (A salient reminder that one should never confuse the health of a company with that of its stock.)

Across the Atlantic, headlines in Athens continued to be bleak, with National Bank of Greece ( NBG ) nose-diving an NYSE-worst 15.24%. Still, one must admire the natives' inadvertent attempts to enliven ever more depressing newscasts .

Today's quarterly earnings announcements are due to include American Woodmark ( AMWD ) and Dollar General (DG).

American Residential Properties (ARPI): Morgan Stanley starts the stock at Overweight.

AthenaHealth (ATHN): Goldman Sachs assigns a Neutral on ATHN.

Cerner (CERN): The information technology outfit gets begun with a Buy at Goldman Sachs.

Emerge Energy Services (EMES): Shares are set a Buy at Citigroup.

Ethan Allen Interiors (ETH): The furniture firm is a fresh Buy at Dougherty.

Intersil (ISIL): Piper Jaffray starts the semiconductor stock at an Overweight.

LSI Corporation (LSI): Longbow launches LSI at a Buy.

MoSys, Inc. ( MOSY ): The integrated circuits outfit is initiated with a bullish Buy at Roth Capital.

PennyMac Financial (PSFI): Shares are picked up with a Neutral at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch.

RPM International (RPM:) The specialty chemicals company is a new Neutral at Robert W. Baird, whose target price is $36. A domestic commercial construction snap back should be a boost, but shares appear appropriately valued at current levels.

SeaWorld Entertainment (SEAS): Wells Fargo establishes the recent initial public offering at Outperform.

Valspar (VAL): Robert W. Baird begins Neutral-rated research and an $80 target price on the company.
