Exactech
(
EXAC
), which makes orthopedic implant devices, recently expanded its
spine business with the full commercial launch of the Gibralt
spinal system for posterior cervical fusion (a surgery performed to
stabilize cervical spine). The launch of this new system represents
an important milestone for the Gainesville-based company's spine
franchise.
The Gibralt spinal system, which was recently unveiled at the
Cervical Spine Research Society annual meeting, is designed to
offer posterior stabilization and an adjunct to fusion of the
cervical and upper thoracic spine.
The versatile, easy-to-use, Gibralt spinal system features
polyaxial screws, hooks and connectors (offset and rod-to-rod)
which can be built into multiple configurations according to the
patient's anatomy. Th e product's low-profile pedicle screw with 80
degrees of motion is geared to mitigate the risk of tissue
impingement in the thoracic spine.
The company said that the Gibralt spinal system can be connected
with its lumbar pedicle screw systems including Proliant and
Hydralok. The Proliant screw system was the first
internally-developed spinal system by Exactech.
Exactech established its spine business through a couple of
acquisitions. The company added spinal fusion products (including
two pedicle screw fixation systems for lumbar fusion) through its
acquisition of spinal implant devices maker Altiva Corporation in
January 2008.
Moreover, Exactech, in August 2010, acquired multiple spinal
product lines from VertiFlex Inc, which develops less intrusive
spinal surgery technologies that help preserve motion.
Exactech develops and markets orthopedic implant devices. Its
orthopedic products are utilized for the restoration of bones and
joints that have degenerated due to diseases. Apart from the U.S.
the company markets its products in more than 30 other markets
globally.
