Atmel Corporation
(
ATML
) recently expanded its ARM Cortex-M4 based flash microcontroller
family with the addition of the new SAM4E series, which comprises
advanced connectivity solutions, a floating point unit, superior
analog capabilities and higher processing power.
The high performance and high system integration features of
SAM4E microcontrollers are ideal for industrial automation and
building control applications. SAM4E series of flash
microcontrollers offers a speed of 120 MHz along with a full
range of high-speed peripherals for fast data transfer. The new
suite of flash microcontrollers is expected to address the
manufacturing automation, which requires superior performance,
advanced connectivity and better analog capabilities. The
advanced analog technology on the device includes 16-bit ADCs
that offset error and gain control.
Atmel is in the process of transforming itself into a
microcontroller-based company, which it believes will augment its
cost structure and unlock value. The company is focusing more on
its core microcontroller business by introducing the latest
products with the aim of targeting high-growth and high-margin
businesses.
Based in San Jose, California, Atmel designs, develops,
manufactures and sells integrated circuit (IC) products. These
products include microcontrollers, advanced logic, mixed-signal,
non-volatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components. The
company has released a substantial number of new products in the
past few quarters, which is likely to benefit the business during
industrial recovery.
The company operates in an intensely competitive landscape that
includes big players such as
Intel Corporation
(
INTC
) and
Texas Instruments
(
TXN
). Given the competition, constant technological upgrades are the
most befitting survival strategies of Atmel.
Atmel currently has a Zacks Rank #1(Strong Buy). One of its
competitors,
Diodes Incorporated
(
DIOD
) also carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
