Bullish housing and manufacturing data as well as upbeat earnings has both blue-chip and small-cap stocks rising Monday, although the Nasdaq Composite index recently reversed its early rise and was again trading in the red for a second day.

Drug deals also were fueling equity gains today after Pfizer ( PFE ) increased its offer for Astra-Zeneca ( AZN ) to $100 billion while Forest Labs ( FRX ) made an offer worth up to $1.5 billion for Furiex Pharmaceuticals ( FURX ), boosting the healthcare sector.
