Market Wrap-Up for Sept.13 (MA, V, GS, JPM, FCX, PNC, more)

The buyers are showing up early in the markets this week. The question is, will the buying add up to higher-than-average volume when the trading day closes? That will determine the strength of today's rally.

We continue to monitor the premium watchlists ( MidCap , SmallCap , High Yield ) each weekend to see which candidates may be worth adding to our recommended list. That Best Dividend Stocks list has had a few changes over the last few weeks, but the names on the list continue to hold up well despite the market volatility. September has been a fairly good month so far, despite all the warnings from traders that the seasonality factors with this month were going to spell doom. The market has done an amazing job of fooling many experts that continue to make a living with their "always accurate" bottom and top calls. Again, the pundits' ramblings are great for day-to-day TV ratings when you are constantly asking every guest "Where does the market head from here" and "Give me your short-term and long-term picks." The standard answer tends to be short-term cautiously optimistic, but long-term nothing but blue skies. How can you go wrong when taking both sides of the fence?

As for the action in the markets today, credit card plays MasterCard ( MA ) and Visa ( V ) continued to get beat up despite the market's gains. The selling however did not affect other financial plays like J.P. Morgan ( JPM ) , Goldman Sachs ( GS ) or PNC Financial ( PNC ) . The buying in the financials has been weak for the most part for the past few months. The stocks in that sector still have lots of work to do to get in a better spot technically. You can't say that about commodity stocks like Freeport McMoran ( FCX ) and Cliffs Natural Resources ( CLF ) which continue to outperform. Traders have placed these names among their favorite high-beta stocks to move in and out of each trading day. Volume picked up some as we are hoping to see the rally spread out to different sectors now.
