September has been a fairly good month so far, despite all the
warnings from traders that the seasonality factors with this month
were going to spell doom. The market has done an amazing job of
fooling many experts that continue to make a living with their
"always accurate" bottom and top calls. Again, the pundits'
ramblings are great for day-to-day TV ratings when you are
constantly asking every guest "Where does the market head from
here" and "Give me your short-term and long-term picks." The
standard answer tends to be short-term cautiously optimistic, but
long-term nothing but blue skies. How can you go wrong when taking
both sides of the fence?
As for the action in the markets today, credit card plays
) and Visa (
) continued to get beat up despite the market's gains. The selling
however did not affect other financial plays like J.P. Morgan (
) , Goldman Sachs (
) or PNC Financial (
) . The buying in the financials has been weak for the most part
for the past few months. The stocks in that sector still have lots
of work to do to get in a better spot technically. You can't say
that about commodity stocks like Freeport McMoran (
) and Cliffs Natural Resources (
) which continue to outperform. Traders have placed these names
among their favorite high-beta stocks to move in and out of each
trading day. Volume picked up some as we are hoping to see the
rally spread out to different sectors now.
