The market was unable to hold on to early gains, as afternoon selling pushed the averages to close in the red. Some traders are pointing to options expiration this week as a catalyst for the pullback.

We added a new name on to our "Recommended" list today (link is below if you didn't read this morning's e-mail alert). The stock is better suited for aggressive investors that are seeking growth over yield in part of a portfolio. Every dividend investor has to be comfortable with his or her own style. If you like dividend income, stay with the higher-yielding plays and simply ignore the "aggressive" noted recommendations. If one is looking for a diversified dividend portfolio of income and growth, then you could look to balance your portfolio in that way. I would recommend readers use our Dividend Portfolio Generator on our site to help with setting up portfolio sample ideas. I am still hoping the market can slow down the pace of gains, as there are some great names I am hoping investors can scale into on pullbacks.

Back to today's action, there were two names that stood out, including Novartis ( NVS ) stock which rallied on news the company will be buying the remainder of Alcon ( ACL ) shares it does not already own. Also, shares of Joy Global ( JOYG ) spiked higher on the company's earnings blow-out and raised guidance. On the downside, Broadcom ( BRCM ) pulled back some despite the company's raised guidance. Best Buy ( BBY ) continued to slide following yesterday's sell-off. Also, investors trimmed credit card plays Mastercard ( MA ) and Visa ( V ).
