Market unimpressed by economic numbers, invasion

After the Open... After rising in the pre-market, stocks now appear to be falling, but the day is still young. A spate of economic numbers released today were, as usual, contradictory and hard to parse. Personal spending fell in July, but consumer sentiment appears to have improved quite a bit in August, rising to 82.5, its highest level since July of 2007. The long awaited Russian invasion of Ukraine has now actually happened, and if anything, the market is relieved. Surety can always be dealt with more easily than uncertainty.

Here are your Friday morning market metrics. Industries doing well today include Semiconductors, Consumer Finance and Real Estate Management. Industries showing weakness include Construction/Engineering, Textiles/Apparel, and Leisure Products.

The VIX is up 2.3% to 12.33 after closing on Thursday at 12.05. Occidental Petroleum ( OXY ) options are the most actively traded again today, with 25K November 110 calls, 20K November 115 calls, 16K January 125 calls and 16K January 115 calls changing hands. The put-call volume ratio is 0.96, (406,294/389,794). NYSE Adv/Dec 1,433/1,505. Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1,164/1,241. [InvestorsKeyhole, various news and data sources]
