Market Chatter: Gold Futures Settle Lower, Back Below $1,690

"Gold futures fell Wednesday, retreating from the one-month high they saw a day earlier, as the U.S. dollar strengthened," MarketWatch reported.

It said: "February gold fell $6.50, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,686.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange, giving back Tuesday's $6.20 gain and then some."

"Prices had already been trading lower when the U.S. House approved a suspension of the U.S. debt ceiling until May 19. The results of the vote emerged right as the Comex trading session drew to a close."
