Lockheed Upgrades Sensors for Navy - Analyst Blog

Defense major Lockheed Martin Corporation ( LMT ) received a contract from the U.S. Navy for continuing the development work of Infrared Search and Track ("IRST") sensor system for the U.S. Navy F/A-18E/F.

In a combat, the ability to strike first accurately holds the key to success. Lockheed's IRST sensor system has given that edge to the defense department. The system developed by Lockheed significantly improves raid cell count and is 40 times more accurate than the conventional radar system.

The technology used to develop the IRST system has enabled it to track down multiple targets over a large area at a single go and the sensor continues to perform at a consistent level despite the electronic attack or jamming of radars. The size of the sensor system enables it to be mounted in various locations, from a conformal fuselage mount to a pylon.

These attributes have made the IRST sensor system a significant catalyst and helped in the improvement of performance of the overall weapon systems.  This system is already in use in the F-14 platform and a production line is dedicated to deliver units to international variants of the F-15. The company has also roped in another defense behemoth Boeing Co. ( BA ) to develop an IRST capability for the U.S. Air Force F-15C.

We believe the new contract from the U.S. Navy to continue with further development points towards the fact that IRST sensor system is becoming an integral part of the air-to-air combat missions. This system equips fighter jet pilots with more options in the combat zone and safeguards the jets on which millions of dollars of tax payers' money are invested.

Lockheed currently retains a Zacks #3 Rank, which translates into a short-term Hold rating. The company primarily competes with The Boeing Co . , Northrop Grumman Corporation ( NOC ) and Raytheon Co. ( RTN ), all of which presently have Zacks # 3 ranks (short-term Hold).

Based in Bethesda, Maryland, Lockheed Martin is a global security company that is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.
