Litigation Costs Drive Visa to $1.84 Billion Q3 Loss (V)

Credit card issuer Visa Inc. ( V ) late Wednesday said it swung to a fiscal third quarter loss on litigation provision charges, although adjusted results still beat Wall Street's expectations.

The San Francisco-based company reported a fiscal third quarter net loss of $1.84 billion, or -$2.74 per share, compared with a net profit of $1 billion, or $1.43 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time items, adjusted profit was $1.56 per share.

Revenue rose 10% from last year to $2.6 billion.

On average, Wall Street analysts expected a smaller profit of $1.45 per share for the latest quarter.

Visa shares rose $1.73, or +1.4%, in aftermarket trading Wednesday.
