Latin American Markets Either Falling Further, Or Losing Some Earlier Gains; Declines For Resource Stocks Offset By Financial Gains

Latin American markets are either falling further or losing of their earlier gains late afternoon. Energy and mining stocks are largely lower, offsetting moderate gains for most financial stocks.

Shares of banks and other financial institutions appear to be responding to European Union leaders approving a $64 billion aid plan for Greece as well as an agreement placing about 200 banks under supervision of the European Central Bank rather than individual regulators in each country.

Here's where the regional markets stand today:

- Ibovespa was down 103.46. Now down 181.4 at 59,292.8.

- IPC (Mexico City) was up 4.65. Now down 39.8 to 43,143.1.

- Santiago Index IPSA down 13.2 (-0.4%) to 3,643.92.

- Merval Buenos Aires up 5.19 (+0.2%) to 2,616.1.

In company news, ADRs of Ecopetrol SA ( EC ) are slightly lower after Standard & Poors' late yesterday reaffirmed the company's international foreign currency rating at BBB- with a positive outlook, maintaining its investment-grade status.
