Jobs, earnings dominate calendar

Last month's belated payrolls report is the main economic event on today's calendar.

The Labor Department will release the numbers at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect that 183,000 jobs were added in September, up from 169,000 in August. The closely watched private-sector component is expected to increase to 183,000 from 152,000.

Unemployment is forecast at 7.3 percent, unchanged from the previous month. The report was delayed from Oct. 4 by the recent government shutdown, so it's not clear how much it will affect market sentiment.

The Richmond Federal Reserve will release its regional economic gauge at 10 a.m. ET, followed by natural-gas inventories half an hour later.

In addition to the economic news, there's a heavy roster of quarterly reports from companies. Delta Air Lines, DuPoint, EMC, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Forest Laboratories, Harley Davidson, Travelers, United Technologies, and Whirlpool are on the lineup for the morning. Altera, Amgen, Broadcom, Juniper Networks, and Cree are among the afternoon's major names.
