Initial jobless claims and Exxon Mobil's earnings are the main events on today's calendar.

Economists forecast that 310,000 Americans sought unemployment benefits for the first time, up from last week's eight-year low of 284,000. The Labor Department releases the numbers at 8:30 a.m. ET.

In addition to XOM, other noteworthy companies announcing results this morning include MasterCard, ConocoPhillips, Apache, Avon Products, and DirecTV.

The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index follows at 9:45 a.m. ET and is expected to come in at 61.8, down from June's 62.6 reading. Natural-gas inventories come out at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Earnings after the closing bell include Expedia, Tesla Motors, Fluor, Western Union, Tableau Software, and LinkedIn.

Tomorrow is packed with economic events again: non-farm payrolls, the Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index, consumer sentiment, and construction spending. Chevron, Clorox, and Procter & Gamble report as well.
