As the next big personal electronic device of Apple ( AAPL ) prepares to hit store shelves later this week, analysts are pondering how its experience on the market will play out.

The Associated Press reports the iPhone 4S will not displace the iPhone 4 as the two smartphones are very similar. The 4S - which is available in black or white this Friday via two-year contracts with Verizon ( VZ ), AT&T ( T ) and Sprint ( S ) - has a faster processor, some new software, a personal assistant driven by voice and a better camera. So the iPhone 4S is better than the iPhone 4.

Sprint joined the fray earlier this month, catching up with its larger rivals in selling the iPhone, according to Bloomberg. A top official acknowledged there have been financial challenges associated with picking up the iPhone and vowed to further discuss the matter.

"Friday was tough on the stock , tough on everybody in terms of the way it came across," Sprint chairman James Hance told Bloomberg. "It was a mistake not to disclose the impact of the iPhone - a mistake we will fix. We will talk about the impact when we talk about the third-quarter earnings ."

T-Mobile, which is under federal review for its proposed  acquisition by AT&T, does not sell the iPhone. The U.S. Justice Department is challenging the acquisition, claiming it violates antitrust laws.
