Once again, financial earnings dominate today's event calendar.

Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, BB&T, BlackRock, and PNC Financial all report this morning, along with chemical producer PPG Industries and health insurer UnitedHealth. American Express and Capital One follow in the afternoon, along with semiconductor giant Intel.

Economic releases include initial jobless claims and the consumer-price index, both at 8:30 a.m. ET. Claims are expected to come in at 333,000 up slightly from 330,000 in the previous week. Forecasters are looking for CPI of 0.3 percent and 0.2 percent excluding food and energy, compared with a flat reading and 0.2 percent respectively in the previous month.

The Philadelphia Federal Reserve's regional economic activity index, scheduled for 10 a.m. ET, is expected to improve to 8 from December's 6.4 figure.

Also at 10 a.m. is the NAHB housing market index, which could impact sentiment among homebuilder stocks. Economists forecast a reading of 57, down from 58 in the previous month.

Natural-gas inventories round out the agenda at 10:30 a.m. ET.
